Special guest a Shingleback lizard (pictured above), in true Aussie spirit it’s a bit confusing with a short, wide, stumpy tail which resembles their head, potentially confusing predators… and Kiwis…

Each destination offers a rich blend of culture, history, localised food, and natural beauty—perfect for solo travellers, couples, families, or luxury seekers. Plan for variety, be ready for sensory surprises and delights, and let the locals guide your adventure.

My First Impressions

Touching down in Melbourne on a crisp afternoon, I was drawn straight into the city’s pulse. Wandering through the infamous laneways bursting with expressive graffiti and a grassroots energy, I felt like I’d been dropped into a living art gallery. The layers of colour and creativity gave the city a vibrancy that was infectious.

Capturing the Essence: A Standout Moment

One of my most memorable moments was arriving in Melbourne just as evening settled in. The streets seemed to hum with anticipation. As we explored the laneways, each turn revealed quirky street art and the aroma of fresh food drifting from tucked-away eateries. We settled into a craft beer bar and lingered over a platter with a terrine, fresh bread, figs, and pickles, so perfect for late-night grazing and soaking up the city’s people and relaxed-yet-edgy vibe.

Unique Cultural Elements in Every Stop

Melbourne

Trams carried us from the city to the local-favourite St Kilda Market, where genuine crafts, jewellery, and food stalls created a community-focused atmosphere. No big-name stores just authentic, local flavour. We devoured a banh mi packed with vivid herbs and perfectly cooked meat, and at Bodriggy Brewing Co, sampled beers and swapped stories with locals at “The Froff Shop.” Fitzroy Market impressed with its curated second-hand clothes.

For after-dark adventures, Melbourne shines. The Caretaker’s Cottage is a true standout—recently awarded the Michter’s Art of Hospitality Award (The World’s 50 Best Bars 2024), ranked #21 in The World’s 50 Best Bars, crowned the #1 bar in Victoria, and named Best Bar in Australasia. It’s a must-visit for cocktail lovers and those who appreciate world-class hospitality.

Food in Melbourne is an experience of its own. Don’t miss Mesa Verde for easy-going Mexican with sensational food and drinks, followed by a visit to the Rooftop Bar above—it’s the perfect spot for sunset city views. For sports fans, nothing beats the energy of an AFL game at the legendary MCG, definately an authentic Melbourne experience. And if you want a classic city evening, dine along the scenic Yarra River before a show in the ever-buzzing Arts District.

Tasmania

Arriving in Hobart (above!), our hotel overlooked the working harbour—a stunning backdrop for exploring the city. The local tourism rep helped us uncover hidden gems. Up north, our stay near Cradle Mountain featured a cabin with local produce for dinner, all surrounded by wild natural beauty. At Josef Chromy Wines, we enjoyed a luxurious platter (below) and wine tasting with a sweeping view. Tasmania truly excels in artisan food and wine.

Adelaide & Beyond

Adelaide’s orderly city core is surrounded by parklands, blending old-world character with modern flair. A highlight was venturing north to the Murray River and the luxurious Murray River Trails houseboat complete with spa deck and en-suite cabins. River tours brought the landscape and its wildlife close, and guides shared stories about the region’s flora and fauna. Local pubs like The Woolshed buzzed with community. In the Barossa, we biked between historic wineries such as Seppeltsfield and soaked up sweeping vineyard vistas from the elegant Kingsford Barossa, with its classic French ambience.
